The Beaches and the 1984 World's Fair
This special gallery contains photos from three New Orleans places that "Ain't Dere (there) No More".
In 1983, I had the great fortune to work at Pontchartrain Beach during the last summer before it closed forever. The following year, I had the awesome experience of working at the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition (the last world's fair to date). I was a ticket-taker at the MART Gondola attraction, which took riders across the Mississippi River some 300 feet in the air!
Finally, there is the abandoned Lincoln Beach. During the Jim Crow era, this amusement park served the African-American community until 1965. Some of the structures still stand, though terribly vandalized.
