HOLY ANGELS (1986, 1992)
Nestled on a city block within the Bywater District of New Orleans' 9th Ward, sat the Academy of the Holy Angels. Established by the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1866, the all-girls school stood the test of time from the Civil War era to 1992, when the nuns finally closed the school. I was privileged to have been a student from 1979-83.
On a visit to my hometown in 1992, I was fortunate to photograph the grounds with my new Mamiya medium format camera (a great vintage find!). The large square negatives captured a lot of the detail of the historic buildings, and the B&W Kodak film lent a ghostly quality to the empty campus.
